FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical traction based treatment for herniated or bulging discs in the neck and lower back. Anyone who has back, neck, arm or leg pain may be helped by spinal decompression therapy.

How many spinal decompression sessions will be needed and are they painful?

The number of sessions needed and your specific treatment plan will be determined by the doctor after your examination.

In almost all cases, the treatments are completely painless.  In fact, some patients fall asleep during the spinal decompression session.

What type of decompression system is used and are the doctors certified in spinal decompression therapy?

After a significant amount of research, Back & Body Chiropractic chose the Triton® DTS system manufactured by the Chattanooga Group, the premier manufacturer of physical medicine equipment.

More importantly, our system, the Triton DTS has the brand new computerized head which is the most sophisticated and technologically advanced unit in the world.

In fact, the new Triton® head is so revolutionary that it won the Australian Design Award in the "Medical and Scientific" category.  It is also the system that the University of Texas purchased for the treatment of its world-class athletes. We also selected the Triton® DTS systems due to their ability to treat discs in both the neck and the low back.

In regard to clinical skills, Dr. Allan Dabbs continues to seek the most advanced continuing education courses available for this and other cutting edge therapies to best help his patients.

What Makes Spinal Decompression Therapy so Effective?

The computerized traction head and doctor skill are the keys.  Proper assessment and the use of preprogrammed patterns of distraction and relaxation may permit disc material to be pulled back within the normal confines of the disc and allow healing to occur.

Who can benefit from Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Anyone who has back pain or neck pain caused in whole or in part by a damaged disc may be helped by spinal decompression therapy. These conditions include herniated, protruding or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, sciatica or even failed surgery.

Are there medical studies that document the effectiveness of Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Yes! One study documented by MRI up to 90% reduction of disc herniations in 10 of 14 cases and other studies reported that the majority of herniated disc patients achieved "good" to "excellent" results after spinal decompression therapy.

"To Your Health" Magazine featured an article about spinal decompression therapy authored by Dr. James Edwards.  In the article, Dr. Edwards discusses the safety and effectiveness of this non-surgical treatment for spinal disc herniations.

Are there conditions where Spinal Decompression Therapy is not indicated?

Spinal decompression therapy is not recommended for pregnant women, patients who have severe osteoporosis, severe obesity or severe nerve damage.

Spinal surgery with instrumentation (screws, metal plates or “cages”) is also contraindicated.  However, spinal decompression therapy after bone fusion or non-fusion surgery, can be performed.

Will Insurance Cover the Cost of My Spinal Decompression Program?

YES! Most insurance plans provide coverage for the cost of our spinal decompression program. While reimbursement can vary, your out-of-pocket expense for all needed services could be as little as your co-payment.

If you do not have health insurance, we offer CareCredit that will allow you to make 6 monthly payments with no interest.  To apply for financing online and get instant approval in advance, just go to CareCredit.com.

Do most patients receive therapy and rehabilitative exercises in addition to Spinal Decompression Therapy?

To reduce inflammation and assist the healing process, supporting structures are treated with passive therapies (ice/heat/muscle stimulation), chiropractic adjustments (as indicated) and/or active rehabilitation in order to strengthen the spinal musculature.

My Experience at Back & Body Chiropractic with Dr. Dabbs and the Spinal Decompression Therapy he offers his patients.

I was having severe lower back pain for over six months. After having x-rays and a CT scan, I was surprised to find that 3 lower lumbar discs were herniated.

Even before I was to visit Back & Body Chiropractic, I had a favorable impression of your team and treatments. My friend had been through the treatment with you and told me in glowing terms of the wonderful care and relief he had received for his severe sciatica, so I was hoping to be someone who could be helped with Decompression Therapy.

I was not disappointed when I came for my first appointment, from the welcoming reception from Jill, Heather and Debra at the desk to my interview with Dr. Dabbs, who quickly put me at ease. Because of my age, I had doubts whether I would even be accepted for the Program so I was most thankful to be approved and was quickly entered for the Spinal Decompression treatments.

With every session, on entering  Dr. Dabbs office, I felt the warm atmosphere and the quiet harmony of everyone working so well together, evidence of them loving their roles.  Also, I was always seen at my appointed time which is not even hardly expected anymore at a doctors office.

Half way through the program, around the 10th session I experienced such a dramatic release of my back pain. To be able to sleep for several hours at a stretch, to move lively and even positioning in bed without pain is so wonderful. I have regained my previous quality of life! What can I do but tell people of my admiration for you and how you can help them. Fortunately for us, Dr.Dabbs had the foresight in acquiring this wonderful technology and I hope that more and more sufferers will learn about it and be able to achieve the same great results that I have. Thank you also to your staff for their generous and good hearts. I especially appreciate that you take the time, even with such full schedules to stop by to say ‘Hello’.

To all the team, with your outgoing cheerful attention, coming back for the follow up, I experience the same inviting pleasant feeling as it was all along during the treatment. What a difference you make every day for us. You are a wonderful example in showing others how it is done!

I shall continue to tell others how much you helped me and how much you would like to help them.

You are an exceptional group and I forever shall appreciate what you have done for me.

With heartfelt gratitude and love,

Your Grateful Patient
